Η Σκόνη που πέφτει
I Skoni pou pefti
Chronis, a successful journalist, lives a comfortable life
in Athens with his wife and two children. His father, a schoolteacher by
profession, was conscripted during the Greek civil war in the army
reserves to fight against the rebels. In the course of battle, his father
disappeared. At the end of the war, he was recognised by the government as
having “died in the service of his country” and his family was
subsequently granted benefits awarded to the families of war victims.
One night, as Chronis is watching a historical documentary on the civil
war, he is shocked to see whom he believes to be his father, fighting on
the side of the rebels.
The notion that his father defected to the rebel side overwhelms him and
he begins an exhaustive investigation that sees him travelling to various
parts of Greece and former Eastern Bloc countries, such as Bulgaria and
the Czech Republic, which played host to Greek political refugees after
the end of the war. In trying to piece together fragments of his father’s
past, he sources information from the jarred memories of former guerrilla
fighters. No-one is able to provide him with the closure he seeks. The
startling truth is to be found in a film archive.
