The Greek Film Festival of Sydney will screen five films from Greece’s acclaimed auteur, Pantelis Voulgaris when it opens on September 8, 2005. Over the three weeks festival patrons will be given a rare chance to see a selection of Voulgaris’ films, which capture the reality of the modern Greek experience. “Voulgaris’ film are of those rarities which are able to reach a diverse audience through a balance and blending of personal and collective experiences that relate to humanity creating a intimate cinematic experience“ said Festival director, Helen Goritsas. The retrospective screens the award winning films Anna’s Engagement (FIPRESCI Winner, 1974), the powerful and moving Stone Years (winner of the Venice Film Festival’s OCIC Award – Special Mention, 1985), The Striker with the No. 9 (nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival, 1989), It’s a Long Road and Eleftherios Venizelos. The festival will screen 19 Greek films with Festival favourites including Voulgaris’ most recent film Brides as opening night film, the amazing closing night film America America, the classic 1970’s comedy The Counterfeit Coin, the powerful film Hostage which is based on the true story of an Albanian hijacking a Greek bus, the witty contemporary film Liza and all the others and Theo Angelopoulos’ ‘painfully beautiful’ film Trilogy: The Weeping Meadow. The Festival opens in Sydney on September 8th and runs until September 25th at Palace Norton St, Leichhardt.
